The state flag of Rhode Island was adopted in 1897 and still flies today in the capital city of Providence. The flag is of a white background and features a golden anchor with a banner below it that reads "Hope." The symbol of an anchor has been used throughout history as a symbol of hope and is a reference to the coastal nature of the city. Surrounding the anchor are 13 stars which represent the Thirteen Colonies and Rhode Islands induction as the 13th state of the Union.
