The state flag of Massachusetts was recognized in 1908 and flies in Boston to this day. The flag depicts a blue shield upon a white field with a golden image of a Native American holding his bow down as a metaphor of peace with the indigenous people of the state. The flag also reads the state's Latin motto "Ense Petit Placidam Sub Libertate Quietem" which translates to "By the Sword We Seek Peace, But Peace Only Under Liberty."
